get uncomfortable

Let me tell you about some of the worst ten days of my life. October 2011, Edinburgh, Nuffield Health.

I had taken my second job as a fitness instructor (read 80% reception work) and part of the deal was to go through NPLQ lifeguard training.

Now, I wouldn’t have chosen to be a lifeguard, seeing as I didn’t like swimming

But it was a requirement of my new job, so I had to overcome my fear of water, dig deep and just get this done.

What happens when you force someone to do something they’re terrified of doing before they’re ready?

Panic attacks

Literally sick with fear

Low blood pressure

Stress

Depression

and a prescription for prozac. Prozac.

Come on, Ainzlie!!!

At the time I felt I had no choice.

Not surprisingly, I failed the initial assessment but I got given another chance which meant more swimming, almost every day for MONTHS.

At this point I hated the job. I hated everything about it. The shift patterns were killing me. I was in an unsupportive environment. Going to work just drained me of all my happiness.

I wanted to quit and if I had, I could’ve given up all this bloody swimming cos I wouldn’t need the qualification.

But I am nothing if not stubborn. I wanted to pass that NPLQ more than I had ever wanted anything in my life.

Why? To show myself that I could do it.

I wanted to conquer my fear and even the panic of standing looking down into that pool was worth it, just to see if I could pass.

Why did I do this to myself?

Because quitting just to feel comfortable was a waste of all that energy. I did not go that far to only go that far.

See, if you want to get over something or get better at something you need to keep going. To get what you really want at some point it’s going to be uncomfortable.

Uncomfortable enough to make you quit.

Such as;

  • Walking into that gym with no idea what to do or where to go
  • Getting real with yourself about why you haven’t lost weight
  • Giving up your comfort food and stress eating

You need to make peace with it and get uncomfortable, push on through the difficult bits.

  • Stick to the plan
  • Go to the gym
  • Do the workouts
  • Follow the nutrition plan

Push past the excuses that you’ve always given yourself, they are getting you nowhere.

Weight loss requires you to get uncomfortable to reach your goals. It’s not easy but it’s worth it.

After all, Why not you?

Ainzlie

p.s I did eventually pass my NPLQ, cut ties with my old workplace, became self employed and haven’t been in a pool since!
