How to choose the right personal trainer?

You want to work out and you’ve decided to hire a personal trainer. You’re pleased with yourself for taking action. Excellent.

You ask google. There are 50,000 results. What do you do?

Here’s how to choose the right personal trainer.

What is your goal?

The right personal trainer can’t be all things to all people. Yes, we have transferable skills but the fact of the matter is that you want someone who can train you in the specific way necessary to reach your goals.

Do you want fat loss? Look for a personal trainer who specialises in nutrition.
Do you want to run a marathon? Look for a personal trainer with experience with runners.
Are you coming back to exercise from pregnancy? Look for a personal trainer with a pre/post-natal qualification.

Be specific and rule out anyone who cannot help you.

Check their qualifications.

No-one does this. Perhaps it’s because I work in a gym now and I am promoted by the gym who have checked out my qualifications and so this cuts out that step.

However, don’t be afraid to check up on your potential PT. If their qualifications aren’t listed on their site, that’s fine, feel free to email them and ask.

This is your health that you’re putting on the line, your HEALTH. Find where they trained, google it.

Are they certified from the school of Instagram or have they studied for their knowledge?

Look for testimonials.

Do they have a website? Does that website include testimonials from previous clients? This isn’t fool proof obviously. We live in the world of photoshop and you should always question everything you see online.

Having said that, read any testimonials that are there. Have those people achieved what you’re looking to achieve?

If you’re looking for fat loss and all the testimonials are about training for a triathlon then its probably not for you.

Look beyond the physical.

I get it, right? You want to hire someone who looks like they are fit. And quite rightly so, if your PT looks like they will collapse on the floor at any minute perhaps they’re not practicing what they preach.

They don’t need to look like an athlete or a fitness model to be healthy and fit, but they should follow a healthy lifestyle.

This is where you can investigate them further, do they have social media? Do they post regularly? Are their posts representative of a healthy lifestyle?

Have a chat.

The right personal trainer will be happy to chat to you, in person or on the phone. This is your chance to see if you have a rapport with this person. You might be spending up to 3 hours a week with this person, you need to have some kind of spark.

If you go along and the conversation doesn’t gel with you, it’s fine to walk away. Choose someone who you can see yourself able to chat to. Someone who gets you. This can be hard in an initial meeting, but generally speaking if the spark is there – you’ll feel it immediately.

Follow these steps and you’ll be able to narrow down your search for the right personal trainer.
