I’m in a few Facebook groups for personal trainers, as you do when you join an industry

Seek out your peers and learn from them

Hoping that this would be a place to learn, however as is the nature of the Internet, it’s often less about learning and more being told what the truth is.

Facebook arguments are tiring and unnecessary, especially when it boils down to opinion.

Example;

A bunch of PTs arguing over whether sugar filled flavouring added to water would be OK for a client to take.

Some say yes, it helps with adherence.
Others say no, sugar is not healthy.

Instead of lively debate we sink into an argument with the majority picking on personal trainers who are ‘too strict’ and ‘too elitist’ and obviously ‘terrible trainers’

Amusing when you consider that some of these people have only just started training clients…

I'm always right

My point here isn’t to bash other PTs, but to highlight the fact that opinion is great

but not everyone’s opinion will be relevant to you

If you have a strong opinion and someone else has another opinion you’re likely to debate it, example

Politics
Religion
Diets

That last one there, that’s the biggie.

People are passionate and they will defend their beliefs by ‘educating’ you on what is obviously the correct path (and it’s never the one you’re on)

But really, people just like to be right.

People LOVE being right.

ESPECIALLY when it comes to diets.

The fitness industry is saturated with bad advice
Dangerous advice
Snake oil salesmen queuing up to sell you things
Everyone telling you that their product is best

So which way do you turn?

Who to follow?
Who to believe?

There is only one thing to do when people decide to ‘educate’ you on all the things that you’re doing wrong.

Ask yourself the following questions

Is my plan working for me?
Do I feel energetic?
Am I reaching my goals?
Do I feel happy?

If it’s a resounding YES to the above, congratulations, you don’t need to do anything differently.

If the answer is no then it’s time to investigate.

.

.

.

Research.
Look beyond the promise of dropping 10lbs in a week
Look beyond the promise of this one product changing your life forever within a week
Look beyond all the bullshit

Is this plan sustainable?
Is this plan enjoyable?
Does this plan suit your lifestyle and beliefs?

Give it a shot and monitor how you feel.

But don’t follow any one person.
Question everything.
Question everyone.

And don’t listen to people on Facebook.

Chances are, if they’re on a Facebook group arguing amongst themselves… They’re not worth listening to.

^^^ yep, I said it. I meant it. Not taking it back.

Ainzlie “no time for arguing, I got work to do” McMaster
